About

Alma Gallery Athens presents the new exhibition of the visual artist Captain (real name Christos Kotsoulas) entitled "Libido" dedicated to eroticism. The exhibition includes a total of 15 new works by Captain, which were created during the period of incarceration, a period of trial and for the human libido.

In the text of Giorgos Ikaros Babasakis (Kypseli 08.03.2023) it is mentioned, among other things:
"Captain's harsh humor involves love; it is love. The nudity, although alluring, seems decently clothed. The combination of the colors of erotic desire, the palette of libido, in his works, while pretending to flirt with kitsch, actually seduce with the sacré, with the sacred. Captain knows how to deceive, that's the game he plays, in all seriousness, in (his) art. He puts the important, the essential, the crucial through the back door. He sedates but without being seen , as if admonished by a prankster juggler [...].

Two novels made of pictures. A diptych:
1. The medieval story of Lady Godiva, whose daring to gallop naked through the streets of Coventry led to the redemptive reduction of taxes in the area, as told by the Captain, even converting the legendary Peeping Tom, the tailor who saw naked, and whose name became synonymous with voyeurism, in a dancing set of eyes, converses with the myth of the Rapture of Europa, and with the action of Artemis, goddess of the hunt, protector of small children and animals, and goddess of the moon.
2. A subversive modern version of Jonah, a giant fish, a mackerel/cetus, swallowing a voluptuous/ideal couple in love.

The Captain, in the midst of confinement and quarantine, resorts to History and Myth for redemption; and he does it excellently. Pretending to be ungodly, he uses ecclesiastical banners and kneecaps (spiritual swords, considered the kneecaps) as canvases in the first part of the diptych. He creates sculptures and painting collages on blue and pink velvet in the second part [...]"
