The exhibition "Remember, Body..." at Kalfayan Galleries is a multi-prismatic study of the depiction of the human body in modern and contemporary art.

Opening: Tuesday, April 9, 2024, 18.00 – 21.00.

Taking as its starting point the poem of the same title by K. P. Cavafy*, the exhibition presents, among others, works by: Lynda Benglis, Georgios Bouzianis, Konstantinou Dimitriadis, Dorothy Iannone, Kalos&Klio, Yves Klein, Tracey Emin, Edouardou Sakayan, Lucas Samaras, Takis, Panos Tsagaris, Yannis Tsarouchis and Raed Yassin.

From the oldest known cave paintings, those of the Maltraviezo Cave in Spain (c. 64,000 years old) and the Venus of Willendorf (25,000 – 28,000 BC), the 'deification' of the human body in ancient Greek and Roman art and the idealized realism of the Renaissance as the artists-performers of the 20th c. who turned their own body into a 'work of art' in order to denounce socio-political issues of their time and outdated theories of Art History, the human body has been a timeless source of inspiration without geographical and cultural borders.

The exhibition "Remember, Body..." aspires to highlight the dynamics of the depiction of the human body by creating an open dialogue between different visual media (painting, sculpture, drawing, photography, etc.) and illustrating a journey from the 1920s to today. In some of the works presented in the exhibition the naked body serves as a tool to glorify human nature, love or the ancient Greek ideal of "Kallos", while for other artists it becomes a vehicle for questioning the male and female gaze in art and a tool to highlight socio-political prejudices and to raise questions concerning, among others, beauty, identity, sexuality or gender.
