The Greek career of Maria Callas has been connected with the Herod Atticus Conservatory in two different time periods.

A year before leaving Athens for New York, in July 1944, Maria Kalogeropoulou performed Smaragda in Manolis Kalomiris's opera O protomastoras at the Irodio in July 1944 under the musical direction of the composer himself and directed by Sokratis Karatinos, while just a few days later, in August of 1944, she will perform Leonora in Beethoven's Fidelio under the musical direction of Hans Heirner and directed by Oskar Wallek.

Thirteen years later, in 1957, having already conquered the world, Maria Meneghini-Kallas will return to Herodion for a historic recital as part of the Athens Festival, with arias from Richard Wagner's Tristan und Isolde, The Force of Destiny and Trovatore Giuseppe Verdi, Lucia di Lammermoor by Gaetano Donichetti and Hamlet by Ambroise Thomas, with music conducted by Antonino Votto.

With exactly this repertoire, the 2023 anniversary gala entitled "The Callas in Herodion" will be given in September at the Herodes Atticus Conservatory by the National Opera. Four internationally recognized opera actresses will honor Maria Callas by performing arias from operas by Kalomiris, Beethoven, Wagner, Verdi, Donizetti, Tomas, who she herself performed at the Roman conservatory with her rare vocal range and extraordinary virtuosity, leaving an unsurpassed mark .
