About

The Municipal Theater of Piraeus hosts a production of Rodeo, the installation Dafne Phono Rodeo by visual artist Nour Mobarak.

Dafne Phono is an interdisciplinary installation of Jacopo Peri and Ottavio Rinuccini's first opera, Daphne, first performed in 1598. The characters of Daphne, Apollo, Aphrodite, Eros, Ovid, Python and Chorus are represented here mainly by monumental or large-scale mycelial sculptures set up as paintings and "tragic no" through built-in speakers in their bodies. Drawing parallels between the biological processes and structures of language, this work extends the artist's inquiry into the relationships between discourse, repetition, decay, culture, power and transformation.

The first opera was inspired by the ability to turn speech into music, and Dafne Phono extends this experiment by giving each of the main characters their own language. Four of these languages – Abkhazian, San Juan Quiahije Eastern Chatino, Silbo Gomero and !Xoon – have been chosen for their richness of morphophonology, with the aim of creating an opera with the widest possible palette of human vocal sounds. Italian and Latin link this new multilingual version of the libretto to Rinuccini's original (which survives, while Perry's music is lost).

The plot is based on Ovid's Metamorphoses. Eros punishes Apollo for boasting about his conquests, and by shooting two arrows: the first makes Apollo fall in love with Daphne, daughter of the river god. The second, makes Daphne contradict him. When she escapes from his pursuit transformed into a laurel, Apollo transforms the wreath in his hands into an eternal symbol of triumph. Daphne, after all, must remain trapped in the tree under which Apollo plays love songs on his lyre.

Note: From August 5-25 the Municipal Theater of Piraeus will be closed.
