About

The second co-production between the National Opera and the Opéra Comé de Paris, as part of their strategic partnership, is the opera Les Éclairs.

This is the third opera by the multi-award winning French composer Philippe Hersand, with a libretto by the internationally acclaimed French writer Jean Esnoz, based on the fictional biography of Nikola Tesla. Les Éclairs is a musical journey through industrial revolution New York, following the tumultuous life of Serbian-born cosmopolitan dandy and "mad" scientist Nikola Tesla.

Tesla was born in 1856 in the then Austrian Empire. Until his death in New York in 1943, business and the public are divided over the controversial use of his inventions, while he has only one goal: the wider application of his discoveries to benefit people. In 2010, seven years after Tesla's records and patents were included in UNESCO's Memory of the World Register, Esnoz published his biography of Tesla entitled Des Éclairs. In 2016 the author, commissioned by the Paris Opera, writes a new libretto entitled Les Éclairs, based on his book about Tesla. This is a rather rare phenomenon where the libretto has preceded the musical composition without even having found the composer. Three years later the Comique Opera commissions the composer Philippe Ersan to write a new opera based on Esnoz's libretto.

In 2021, the production is created, conducted by Ariane Matiak and directed by Clément Hervier-Léger with a group of young artists of the Opera Comique. Les Éclairs follows the fate of Nikola Tesla – called Gregor in the opera – which straddles the line between fairy tale and drama. Arriving in New York in 1884, Gregor is haunted by his visions. He wants to develop the uses of electricity in a revolutionary way, but he makes the "mistake" of prioritizing science and not profit. When industrialists prey on him and deviate from his inventions, he takes refuge in the sight of lightning and the company of birds.
