About

An exciting musical journey, moving beyond labels and genres, with leading musicians who throughout their journey explore the limitless possibilities of sound, takes place at the Lighthouse of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center.

This year's Microcosmos series presents five innovative artists with -sometimes less and sometimes more obvious- jazz backgrounds, who stood out in the domestic and international music scene by disrupting forms and boundaries in every musical direction: From the "exciting new Colossus of the saxophone" Oded Tzúr (22/10) and his quartet who transform the secrets of the Indian musical tradition into spiritual jazz, to the subversive Berlin pianist Lambert (19/11), who combines various aspects of modern jazz with electronic and rock elements and from domestic duo Jan Van & Fotis Siotas (11/12), which gives a new perspective to the musical tradition of Northern Greece through the Folk Nowadays project, to the also domestic trio MOb (22/01), which deconstructs jazz forms by incorporating them into compositions from post punk to dance elements. In the last concert of the series, the British Ruby Rushton (31/03) of the immovable Tenderlonious take us on a journey through the tradition of Coltrane-era legends.

A mystery surrounds the pianist, composer and producer who stands out in the contemporary Berlin music scene in recent years, not only because he always appears wearing a mask - thus maintaining the tradition that the Californian Residents already started in the 70s in pop -, but also because it is impossible to classify him musically with absolute clarity.

Lambert, with his self-titled debut album released in 2014, seemed like he would shake up the so-called modern classical music scene, but he showed a creative chameleon by releasing something different every year that usually overturned previous records. With a very interesting discography, creative collaborations (with English folk singer Brookln Dekker and visionary compatriot Stimming) and beautifully quirky soundtracks, we've all been waiting for the mystery to be somewhat solved through his latest records bearing the "eloquent". titles True (2019), False (2020) and Open (2022).

And this year's album titled All This Time comes, which places things on another level and asks the question: is jazz his true musical self? Certainly jazz is one of Lambert's primary influences and preoccupations – and here it's clear, both from the level of virtuosity that characterizes him as a pianist, from his clear references to Bill Evans to Keith Jarrett, or from the sensibility that performs a standard like "Cry Me a River" by Barbara Streisand. With the collaboration of Felix Weigt on bass and Luca Marini on drums, we have a classic jazz piano trio. However, Lambert does not dwell on his youthful musical love, but shares with us various aspects of modern jazz, using electronics and obvious rock elements, thus revealing only one part of his musical self, leaving open the way for an exciting immediate future.

And as for the mystery, Lambert still appears in his live shows with a mask while we enjoy his music in a highly theatrical show.
