For the first time, the works of the painter Karolos Skyrianos will be exhibited at the Michalis Kakogiannis Foundation.

Karolos Skyrianos (1921-2016) was an uncompromising fighter and passionate painter, devoted to Knowledge. He was exiled to Makronisos, Ikaria and Ai Strati. In adverse and inhumane conditions, on the rock gardens of exile, artistic flowers grew. In these works, Karolos Skyrianos opens cracks on the frozen time of exile.

In his works, color freely diffuses between the forms, breaking the boundaries of the concrete, while at the same time transcending the borders of spatial limitation that coincide with those of exile. The faces of his fellow exiles pass through his special personal filter, without idealizing, as a result of which he becomes a special mediator between realistic depiction and expressive freedom. As a man who served Knowledge through his professional engagement with the Encyclopedia, Karolos Skyrianos is at the same time a recorder of History.

Free from ideologies and party dictates, he captures landscapes and people with the subjective accuracy of historical documentation.

His brushes act like the sensitive spikes of a seismograph that records the teetering present of lethargy but also its dynamic instability. A musicality also prevails everywhere in his work, to the extent that his passion for music made him perceive the image in a sound way and capture on the canvas the vital melody of light.
