About

With a wide field of musical applications and artistic interests, two creative musicians meet and define a "space" they call Folks Nowadays: this is also the title of their latest album. The reference to folk, as popular or traditional music is obvious, but of greater interest is the journey itself and the finding of a common path of two separate people (folks) in the diversity of their lives and art.

Giannis Angelopoulos (better known as Jan Van), a drummer and composer who comes from the wider area of modern jazz and world music, with a series of interesting albums to his credit (Misspent, Ladokolla, Jan Van, Poem, Streams), important artistic collaborations and compositions for the theater, he gives us each time a different side of his artistic self. Similarly, Fotis Siotas with his amazing violin, has been distinguished for many years through his collaborations with artists such as Thanasis Papakonstantinou, Sokratis Malamas, Dionysis Savvopoulos, Alcinoos Ioannidis, Giannis Angelakas and Phoivos Delivorias among others. However, his personal compositional activity (The Second and Two Mistakes, in lyrics by Thodori Goni) is what gives him "power" in modern Greek song.

The collaboration of the two artists on the albums Streams and Two Lies, as well as in the composition of the music for the theatrical performance Rizez apo Vamvaki by Efi Theodorou for the Athens & Epidaurus Festival (2022), paved the way for Folks Nowadays which proves to be one of the top records of the year, as it combines sounds and rhythms from the tradition (Macedonian as well as Cretan, Balkan as well as Indian etc.) through the dynamics of violin and percussion, while, at the same time, escaping from all limiting idioms contexts and acquires the creative identity of each musician who here functions as a dual unit. The result is an amazing music that gradually leads us to a real feast of the senses combining both the past and the present with the future, as well as the familiar and familiar with the unexpected.
