About

Podium star Theodoros Kourentzis comes with his new artistic venture, the Utopia orchestra, an international ensemble made up of the world's leading soloists.

Born in Athens in 1972, the distinguished Greek conductor studied alongside the legendary Ilia Moussin at the State Conservatory of Saint Petersburg. In 2004, he founded the musicAeterna orchestra and choir in Novosibirsk, with which he conquered the music capitals of Europe, while in 2018 he took over as chief conductor of the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra. In the meantime, he doesn't stop appearing at all major festivals, collaborating with the most important directors, winning international awards for his recordings. Charismatic and unconventional, he has earned a distinct place in the classical music firmament with his genius performances, which always evoke strong emotions in the music-loving public.

At the Herodes concert, the famous conductor will conduct the Utopia orchestra in Mahler's Third Symphony. Written in the summers of 1895 and 1896, the gigantic Third Symphony (6 movements totaling over 90 minutes) is Mahler's grand hymn to Nature and the elemental forces of beings, struggling to unite with God. For the composer, mutual love is the most wonderful desire of existence, which lifts man from his perishable, painful condition. In the fourth movement, "Zarathustra's Night Song", performed by the mezzo, Mahler wonders about the meaning of life and the possibility of joy, while in the fifth movement children's voices narrate an angelic "sweet hymn, that shakes the heavens with joy" . The final Adagio, comfortingly radiant despite its dark passages, answers the agonizing questions that preceded it and brings the work to its redemptive end.
