A neoclassical walk back in King's Athens (4/4)

The last part of the "neoclassical walk back in King's Athens" tour will bring the journey to a beautiful conclusion and take you back to Omonoia Square, from where you started the tour.

Eleftherios Venizelos Street (Panepistimiou)

Elefterios Venizelos Street (or Panepistimiou Street) were built by the Danish architects, Christian and Theophilus Hansen, between 1839 and 1892 and was supposed to fulfill a boulevard function in Athens. That's why this street used to be called Voulevartou Street. Continue our tour by turning right from Omirou Street into Panepistimiou Street and walking in the direction of Omonoia Square. There is a lot to see and do on this section. There are numerous neoclassical buildings, such as the "Athenian Trilogy".

Academy of Athens

The Academy of Athens (Panepistimiou Street 28), part of the "Athenian Trilogy", is one of the most important neoclassical buildings in Europe, designed by the Danish architect, Theophilus Hansen. The erection of the building began in 1859 and was completed under the supervision of Ernst Ziller in 1887.

University of Athens

The University of Athens (Panepistimiou Street 30) is the oldest building of the "Athenian Trilogy" (built during 1839 and 1864) and was designed by the Danish architect Christian Hansen, older brother of Theophilus Hansen. The fact that this is the second building of the Athenian Trilogy on Eleftherios Venizelos Street is the cause of this street's name - Panepistimiou Street.

National Library

Another part of the "Athenian Trilogy" is the National Library (Panepistimiou Street 32). It is the work of Theophilus Hansen and was built 1887-1892, under the supervision of Ernst Ziller. The National Library building is Doric style and is divided in three compact areas: the central that includes the reading room and the two side wings where the books are located.

Loumidis

Loumidis (Aiolou 106 & Panepistimiou Street) is one of the most famous coffee grinders in Greece. This traditional brand offers fresh Greek coffee, since 1920. If you are lover of java, the mere smell will convince you of its quality.
