A Long-Awaited Dream

The journey to the Agia Sofia Stadium has been a long and eventful one. The story begins in 1926 when land initially designated for refugee housing was transformed into a training ground for Greek refugees in Nea Filadelfeia. In 1930, the construction of the "Nikos Goumas" stadium provided AEK Athens FC with a new home.

In 2003, Giannis Granitsas proposed demolishing the stadium to make way for a new, comprehensive sports and entertainment complex. Unfortunately, the project was stalled due to legal constraints. Dimitris Melissanidis, who took up the reins of the club after its bankruptcy and relegation in 2013, rekindled the dream of the Agia Sofia Stadium. This visionary project aimed to create a stadium befitting the club's stature.

The stadium's design draws inspiration from the Walls of Constantinople, symbolizing AEK's origins. Not just a football arena, it also houses a museum dedicated to Greek refugees who fled Asia Minor in 1922, connecting history with sport.


A Complex Journey

The stadium's construction journey was not without its share of challenges. Legal battles, environmental impact assessments, and financial considerations shaped its path. Despite the obstacles, the stadium persevered, with construction commencing in July 2017 and concluding in September 2022.

The total cost of the project was approximately €98.7 million, with funding provided in stages. The Administrative Region of Attica contributed €20 million, with the remainder covered by Dikefalos 1924, a company founded for the stadium's construction.
