Architecture of Athens Metro Stations
Great attention was paid to the decoration of the Athens Metro Stations. One of its unique characteristics is the fact that its construction was actually the vessel for the execution of large-scale archaeological digs.
More specifically, in the framework of this development, the greatest archaeological excavation in the Athens area was carried out (spanning over an area of 79,000 m²), which revealed more than 50,000 ancient articles ranging from the Neolithic period through present time.
In respect to these priceless cultural findings, the Athens Metro is renowned for its superb archaeological displays at the central Stations of its network, as well as distinctive peices of art created by prominent Hellenic artists - referering to the rapid-transit system, either directly or indirectly, as well as to urban life in general.
