ENIA Gallery presents the solo exhibition of Giorgos Gyzis entitled "Clippings".
The theme of the paintings entitled "Clippings" brings together photographs and articles drawn from old newspapers. Following research, the findings presented focus on issues concerning social and cultural issues of the 20th century. When transferring them to the painted surface, on paper, they retain the elements of their antiquity and are reproduced faithfully in enlargement. The typographical errors and the wear and tear they have suffered become the object of study for a painting practice that narrates the wear and tear of time.
The projects on display converge thematically towards the gradual transformation of the urban landscape during the period of modernization, but also of major socio-political transformations. From the end of the 1930s until the first years of the post-colonial period, the journalistic world followed with concern the issue of population growth, the solution of compensation, the uncontrolled urban sprawl, the need for proper education, the protection of the environment .
Forgotten news stories and photo-documents, with the appearance of a visual work, emerge from archives to evoke emotions. Thoughts written on the eraser seem far away, they express a world that no longer exists. But their essence and timelessness outline the urban environment of which we are a part today.
Opening of the Exhibition: Saturday, April 1, 2023 from 12:00 to 18:00
Note: The gallery will be closed April 13, 14, 15 and 29.
