Recipient of the prestigious Gilmore Artist Award (often called the "Nobel Prize of the piano"), Rafal Blehachs triumphed at the 2005 Warsaw International Chopin Competition, winning not only first but all individual prizes. Today he has an illustrious career under his belt, with appearances in the world's greatest halls, and a reputation as the leading Chopin performer of his generation.

The Sinfonia Varsovia orchestra has a similar musical prestige, with thousands of concerts and over three hundred recordings for the biggest record companies. Prominent Serbian conductor Aleksandar Markovic, the orchestra's first guest principal, conducts tonight's concert, which culminates in the heart-rending Second Symphony by Polish composer Krzysztof Pederecki, who has been the orchestra's artistic director for a number of years.
