About

"Forty paintings created by the international visual artist Anna Achilleos-Staubli with encaustic technique especially for the cafe area of the National Archaeological Museum, attempt to spell out and give meaning symbolically and plastically to the sea as a Homeric word.

As shell and living palimpsest magical content. As a triumphant primordial source of life, as a crossroads of culture and communication. To understand and sing of it as a small Sea and as an ocean, as a magical myrrh, as a resource and as an inexhaustible point, as dizziness and peace.
To measure it mentally, taking us on a journey through the Mediterranean of the entire Greek civilization, from the Ionian and the Aegean to the Libyan and Black Seas. To capture it as the primordial raw material that permeates and defines so many of the precious exhibits of the National Archaeological Museum.

In an original installation, the sea as a dotted organic body, as a rainbow of innumerable shades of blue and as a mysterious shell of creatures and myths, is presented triumphantly, without the need for narrative means. Created with a fascinating range of different and unexpected hues and tones that go back to ancient Greek painting, it is treated by the painter as a first-of-its-kind find and creates a mythical plain of different psychographic moments and eternal oceanic coordinates.

Driven by her imperative to render the majesty of color, the rhythm of shape, the desire of touch, the inexhaustible depth and breadth, Anna Achilleus Stäubli devoted herself for decades to the inherent difficulties of the technique and the exciting possibilities of encaustic art. Discovering the multiple layers of history, the expressionist thrill of fluid and improvised paint, extreme materiality, subtle shading and expressive gesture, she sought in her studies and subsequent career the possibility of a new execution with unerring technique and transcendent artistic quality. Approaching this dominant timeless Greek symbol in a short, inventive and simple way, Anna Achilles Staubli creates from the beginning an excellent simple and densely tangible painting semiology that captivates the viewer", notes the curator of the exhibition Iris Kritikou.
