About

An exciting musical journey, moving beyond labels and genres, with leading musicians who throughout their journey explore the limitless possibilities of sound, takes place at the Lighthouse of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center.

This year's Microcosmos series presents five innovative artists with -sometimes less and sometimes more obvious- jazz backgrounds, who stood out in the domestic and international music scene by disrupting forms and boundaries in every musical direction: From the "exciting new Colossus of the saxophone" Oded Tzúr (22/10) and his quartet who transform the secrets of the Indian musical tradition into spiritual jazz, to the subversive Berlin pianist Lambert (19/11), who combines various aspects of modern jazz with electronic and rock elements and from domestic duo Jan Van & Fotis Siotas (11/12), which gives a new perspective to the musical tradition of Northern Greece through the Folk Nowadays project, to the also domestic trio MOb (22/01), which deconstructs jazz forms by incorporating them into compositions from post punk to dance elements. In the last concert of the series, the British Ruby Rushton (31/03) of the immovable Tenderlonious take us on a journey through the tradition of Coltrane-era legends.

Oded Tzúr is one of the most distinctive saxophonists on the international jazz scene. Based in New York and with significant albums in his modern discography, he is rightly compared to "holy monsters" of the past such as Sonny Rollins and John Coltrane. They describe him as an "exciting new Colossus of the saxophone" - as Rollins was called back in the 50s - or give him a prominent place in the aesthetic trend of modern spiritual jazz, almost analogous to that of Coltrane in the 60s.

It is a fact that Oded Tzúr is an innovator. Along with jazz, he has studied classical Indian music under the tutelage of Hariprasad Chaurasia, grand master of the bansuri flute, as a result of which he has not only delved into the secrets and details of this great musical tradition, but has also developed a special technique : renders with the sax the micro-intervals and micro-tones of Indian music, giving a completely different character to the sound of his sax. There are times when his sound doesn't even resemble a saxophone, and we won't often hear him play the "cliche phrases" that jazz saxophonists are used to.

Furthermore, Oded Tzúr's approach, despite the innovative additions it contains, never departs from melody and structured narrative – in fact, he places a great deal of importance on storytelling, which is evident in the corresponding quality of his compositions. This melodic narrative that characterizes him and the strong Indian influences that can be detected in it, give him the status of the "protagonist" of spiritual jazz for which he is already famous.

With four great records to his credit (Like a Great River and Translator's Notes on Enja Records and Here Be Dragons and Isabela on ECM) Oded Tzúr brings us his great and delightful music, not hesitating to include modern standards, such as "Can't Help Falling in Love With You" by Elvis Presley, together with his excellent collaborators Nital Herskovits (piano), Petro Klabani (double bass) and Jonathan Blake (drums).
