About

On December 14, EMST is opening the first major retrospective exhibition of Lida Papakonstantinou (1945) entitled "Time in my hands", one of the most influential artists in the history of contemporary art in Greece and one of the pioneers of feminist art in our country. For nearly five decades, Papakonstantinou developed a multifaceted and multidimensional work.

Always centered on the body, her work includes performance, sculpture, video, site-specific installations and painting. Issues of gender, sexuality, collective and personal memory, history, politics and ecology are located at the core of her artistic expression. Her work as a whole is a point of reference for Greek art, but also a source of inspiration for younger visual artists.

The exhibition will bring together for the first time a large number of installations, paintings, sculptures, and audio-visual works, as well as rare and anecdotal photographic and textual archival evidence/traces of the performances. The title of Time in my hands comes from the eponymous in situ installation that the artist created in 2010 for the metro station in Monastiraki, which was based on a photograph of the projection of the video entitled The arrows are of love, on a wall of the Ottoman Baths Bay Hammam in Thessaloniki.

On the occasion of the exhibition, a bilingual catalog edited by Tina Pandi, and designed by MNP Design, will be published, with texts by: Katerina Gregou, Angela Dimitrakaki, Deni Zacharopoulos, Claire Macdonald, Tina Pandi, Lida Papakonstantinou, Theofilo Trampouli.
