About

A new production of the 20th century masterpiece by Brecht and Weil is signed by the leading Greek theater director and former artistic director of the National Theater Yiannis Houvardas.

After the great success of Yanacek's Makropoulos Affair in 2018, Houvardas returns to the National Opera to present the "golden city of our dreams that turns to dust and disappears before our eyes" in the Stavros Niarchos Hall at the SNFCC, in a political reading, with moments of "indignation and despair".

This political-satirical opera with lyrics by Bertolt Brecht and music by Kurt Weill premiered in Leipzig in 1930, but was banned by the Nazis a few years later. The play describes the rise and fall of a city of profit and pleasure, criticizing the capitalist system as perceived within the ideological framework of interwar Germany, the Weimar Republic.

For this opera, Weill composed some of his best-known songs, such as "Song of Alabama" and "Song of Benares", which were later made independent, so that they can also be heard separately by famous performers, from Lotte Lenia to the Doors and David Bowie.

As was common during the first decades of the 20th century, in the context of the conversation between classical and "commercial" music, Kurt Weill experimented with various genres, such as jazz and ragtime, which he incorporated into the musical language of the work.
