A 22-year-old man died on Tuesday, after being knifed in clashes between football supporters outside the AEK football club stadium in Nea Philadelphia, Athens on Monday night. He was one of nine people in total who were injured during violent incidents between AEK and Dinamo Zagreb supporters, with the remaining eight - three Greeks and five Croatians - admitted to hospital.

In an announcement on Tuesday, the Hellenic Police headquarters said that 98 people had been detained and an investigation launched to find all parties responsible and shed light on all aspects of the case. It noted that alongside the 100-120 Croatian hooligans in Perissos, there were also Greek supporters acting as their accomplices.

"AEK supporters were gathered in the surrounding area. Incidents between supporters of the two teams ensued, with the throwing of flares, makeshift incendiary mechanisms, objects, stones and the use of makeshift clubs.

"The incidents occurred an hour and a half after the visiting team completed their training and departed from the football field, along with the coaches and police escort."
It said that strong police forces were sent to stop the violence, who detained 98 people involved in the incidents, while an inquiry to locate additional culprits and shed light on any other aspect of the case was continuing.
