Iacovina Kerkezou and Danae Giannouli "wrote History" for Greek sailing, as in the first major international race of 2024, they won the world championship of the 420 class, hosted in Brazil.

This is their second consecutive world title, while in 2023 they were crowned European champions and also won the bronze medal in the World Youth Championship.

These are consecutive great successes for them and of course for Greek sailing, which sees in their faces two great athletes with distinct potential for a great international career.

An excited Iacovina Kerkezou said: "We won the world championship for the second season in a row and that makes us very happy. The race was difficult because there were strange weather conditions. The wind was constantly changing and gave us problems. At the same time, we faced many objections. This is the way they chose to defeat us, but they failed. It is a long story to claim your right and to be justified. You gain experience and your psychology rises. It helps you in your life as a whole. I dedicate the medal to myself first, because we worked very hard together with Danae and got here through many personal sacrifices. We owe a lot to our coaches and of course to our parents who do everything to keep us going and enjoying these successes."

For her part, Danai Giannouli pointed out: "Our joy is enormous, because on the last day of the race we started from third place. And in the end we finished first and won the world championship for the second time in a row. Everyone can understand that in sports something like this is not easy. We feel that we are very strong, we work hard every day and we aim to maintain this level. We have two European championships ahead of us, the open and the junior, and we will give everything to get back on the podium. And the Brazilian race taught us that we should never give up and fight to the end. I dedicate the gold medal to my coach Dimitris Lekakis".
