Turkey thanks Greece for support; GR President praises EMAK rescuers efforts

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's foreign policy adviser, Ibrahim Kalin, on Friday expressed his thanks for Greece's active support of Turkey after the deadly 7.8 magnitude earthquake, which has cost more than 20,000 lives.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's foreign policy adviser, Ibrahim Kalin, on Friday expressed his thanks for Greece's active support of Turkey after the deadly 7.8 magnitude earthquake, which has cost more than 20,000 lives.

In particular, Kalin, responding to Hellenic Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis' Twitter message in Turkish, wrote: "Mr. Prime Minister, thank you for all your support," tweeted in response to a tweet by Greece’s prime minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Tuesday in which he commended the efforts of rescue crews from both countries at the quake-stricken areas.

“Images that fill us with pain are followed by images that fill us with hope: only respect for the superhuman efforts of rescue teams,” Mitsotakis had tweeted in Turkish along with a photo of Turkish and Greek rescue workers in action, adding, “Greeks and Turks side by side, struggling together to save lives. We thank them for what they are doing.”

Moreover, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu spoke on the phone with Hellenic Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Minister Christos Stylianides late Thursday to thank him for the humanitarian aid that Greece has sent to the quake-stricken people of Turkey.

Cavusoglu also asked Stylianides to convey his thanks to Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and the Greek people, noting that this aid was very substantial and not symbolic, as all the items included in the Greek aid consignment fully corresponded to the reality in the country and Turkey's needs in order to address the huge problems created by the powerful earthquake.

On his part, Stylianides told Cavusoglu that, as the PM has pledged, Greece will be at Turkey's side for as long as it is needed.

In related news, Greek President Katerina Sakellaropoulou praised the efforts of Greek rescuers in earthquake-stricken Türkiye in a social media post on Saturday.

"These past few days, shocked by the unspeakable drama unfolding in southeastern Türkiye and northern Syria, with the thousands of dead, we feel deeply moved by the battle fought by Greek rescuers, a battle of life against death," she wrote.

"In defiance of potential aftershocks or further collapse of ruined buildings, brave in the face of danger, the men of the Special Disaster Response Unit (EMAK) remind us -by actions rather than words- that the awareness of another person's pain supersedes the boundaries between people, and sets aside differences between states -no matter how serious- in the name of solidarity and compassion," she continued.

"The heroes of EMAK, who struggle among the ruins, win the admiration of the entire world and make us proud," she concluded.
